AWE engineer to become next President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Giles Hartill, BEng MSc CEng FIMechE, will become President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) next year after recently being elected as Deputy President.

Giles joined AWE as a graduate engineer in 2003 and is now a chief engineer. He has been a member of the IMechE since 1999, becoming a Fellow in 2014 and has volunteered for the Institution continuously for almost 20 years in a variety of roles, including being a Trustee of the charity since 2016.

He is passionate about the promotion of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers in schools, as well as career development opportunities for early career STEM professionals.

Giles said: “This is a huge honour. The IMechE has a vital role in developing, representing and supporting technicians, engineers and STEM professionals to demonstrate their competence and professionalism. I hope that through this opportunity I can raise awareness of the extraordinary career opportunities available in engineering, so we can build a more inclusive, safe, secure and sustainable world.”
