Nuclear graduates visit AWE

Last week, 25 graduates from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s Graduate programme arrived from all corners of the country to take part in a visit organised by AWE’s own sponsored Nuclear Graduates.

The programme is a collaboration within the UK’s nuclear industry, with graduates sponsored by nuclear organisations – both civil and defence – who are seconded to three different businesses on their two-year scheme, building a vast host of skills and knowledge which they take back to their sponsoring organisation on completion of the programme.

The next generation of young professionals in the nuclear sector were taken at on a tour of the  Aldermaston site, and to the graduates’ office base at Green Park. The visitors represented several companies including Rolls-Royce, Sellafield and Nuclear Restoration Services.

The visit allowed the graduates to learn of the history behind AWE, provided insight into the opportunities on offer for a potential secondment and highlighted the need for close relationships between companies in the nuclear industry.

“It was a great opportunity to talk to interesting and passionate people with fascinating jobs. They all offered a unique insight on what the world of defence is really like – something that is hard to get from the outside. The camaraderie and passion on site really came across and only enhanced our experience. Everyone was incredibly helpful and hospitable, meaning the day went smoothly. Plus they  have offered  help and advice further down the line if we want it”.
