AWE forms new partnership with The University of Manchester 

AWE is pleased to announce a new Strategic Alliance with The University of Manchester, marking a significant commitment to advancing research and innovation in nuclear science and technology. 

The University of Manchester becomes AWE’s sixth key strategic university partner, joining the University of BristolCranfield UniversityHeriot-Watt UniversityImperial College London and the University of Strathclyde.

Each university brings a breadth of expertise that supports AWE’s mission in keeping the UK safe.

AWE Academia Lead, Gareth Cairns, said: “By collaborating with The University of Manchester, we are together positioning ourselves to advance materials modelling and research – driving new thinking and also nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers.”

The AWE-University of Manchester partnership demonstrates a shared endeavour to build on the work being undertaken in advanced mathematics and numerical methods. 

Professor Peter Green, Interim Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester, said: “By bringing together academic and industry knowledge in this way we are helping to build the capabilities needed to underpin the UK’s long-term resilience in an increasingly complex world. Through this partnership we will play a vital role in nurturing the future STEM workforce and catalysing research.”

AWE meets requirements of regulatory notice

We welcome the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s decision to close the improvement notice, served last year following an incident on the Aldermaston site at our Explosive Technology Centre. There was no risk to the public or the environment from this incident.
