As an Electrical Engineering (Facilities & Equipment) Degree Apprentice, you’ll learn how to look after the electrical systems that keep AWE’s important facilities and equipment running safely and reliably.
Rather than focusing only on designing new systems, you’ll learn how existing electrical equipment is maintained, improved and kept compliant. You could work with power supplies, lighting, alarms, monitoring systems and other equipment that supports AWE’s work.

THE QUALIFICATIONS YOU’LL NEED
112 to 120 UCAS points from one of the following: three A Levels at a minimum of BCC, including at least one of Maths, Further Maths, Physics or Statistics; a T Level Merit in Engineering and Manufacturing; or a BTEC DMM in Engineering.
GCSE Maths, English and Science at grade 4/C or above.
You must be a British National and aged 18 or over by 31 August 2027 due to the security requirements of the role.

Your primary place of work will be AWE Aldermaston and/or AWE Burghfield in the Reading area, depending on your apprenticeship pathway, placements and business needs.
Due to the nature of our work and security requirements, you should expect to work on-site during your apprenticeship and in your role afterwards. Being on-site will help you learn directly from experienced specialists, access hands-on support and build valuable connections across the business.
At AWE, we operate on a nine-day fortnight, meaning you get every other Friday off work in addition to 270 hours of annual leave, inclusive of Bank Holidays.

• Working with engineering drawings and associated software
• Electrical engineering and electrical safety
• Asset lifecycle management
• Reliability improvement and fault investigation
• Engineering change
• Plant performance monitoring
• Regulatory compliance
• Electrical cable calculations

You enjoy finding out how electrical systems work and investigating what happens when equipment does not perform as expected. You like solving practical and technical problems and using tools, technology and data to understand performance.
You’re interested in making systems safer and more reliable, and in learning how large engineering facilities are run and maintained. You work well with engineers, technicians and other specialists and are ready to keep learning.
